This blog began with the wildflower blooming season in 2010. I post randomly-whenever we get out to look at flowers. I am located in Jefferson County, Colorado, and that is primarily where the information for this blog originates. Thanks to my three dogs who need long daily walks and who like to explore all our area parks. Without them, I wouldn't get out as often.

Rattlesnake Ridge II
This morning was a bonanza of new flowers in bloom. We saw a field of yellow & orange blooms as we approached the top of the ridge. They turned out to be Evening primroses (Oenothera sp.). The orange were the wilted flowers. Along with the primroses was Scarlet gaura (Gaura coccinea). We went a few feet further on and spotted a one-sided penstemon (Penstemon secundiflorus). On the ridge top, on shaly soil, was blue mist penstemon (Penstemon virens). Other plants we found were Wild Onion (Allium textile), American vetch (Vicia americana) and declining chokecherry flowers.

May Morning Walk
Every day now we find a couple of new bloomers. Today it was Lanceleaf Chiming Bells (Mertensia lanceolata) and Wintercress (Barbarea vulgaris or orthoceras). The wintercress was in a riparian area and the chiming bells were on a north-facing slope. Here's a mystery shrub from the south side of Harriman Lake.

Rattlesnake Ridge
This morning we walked over Rattlesnake Ridge just north of our home. We saw musineon (Musineon divaricatum), golden banner (Thermopsis divaricarpa), wax currant (Ribes cereum), and skunkbush sumac (Rhus trilobata) all blooming quite nicely. We took a drive up to the town of Keota in Weld County and golden currant (Ribes aureum) was in flower up there.

Neighborhood Weeds Late April Update
An earlier species has put on seed now and thus allowed identification. The white mustard is Thlaspi arvense or pennycress. Another plant is now in bloom. This one is on Colorado's Noxious Weed A list and is known as myrtle spurge or Euphorbia myrsinites.

Lair O'the Bear Wildflowers Saturday Morning
We took a hike at Lair O'the Bear, elevation ~6,600', this morning. The pasque flowers (Pulsatilla patens) and biscuit root (Lomatium orientale) are in bloom right now. The Oregon grape/holly grape Mahonia repens is starting to bloom. American dippers were in Bear Creek. It's still pretty early for the flowers.

Wildflowers in the Subdivision
Today I found a shepherd's purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris) and noted a crane's bill (Erodium cicutarium) about to bloom. Both of these were probably there yesterday and we just missed them.
